CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Residence Life andHousing, the Assistant Director for Equity and Inclusion leads thecreation of unique equity and inclusion initiatives for ResidenceLife and Housing and enhances equity and inclusion efforts of theDivision of Student Life and the University of Delaware. Throughsupervision of staff, student support, and student advocacy, theAssistant Director serves as a champion for equity and inclusionand the overall student experience in the residence halls. TheAssistant Director directs the efforts of all residence hall staffwithin these areas (3-5 FTE). Through supervision of staff, studentsupport, and student advocacy, the Assistant Director serves as achampion for the student experience in their assigned residencehalls.
Position duties are fulfilled within a 24-hour, 7 day per weekoperation and require periodic evening and weekend timecommitments.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervise and further the development of 3-5 Master’slevel Residence Hall Coordinators (RHCs) in their work to enhancestudent learning and support through engagement, student ledprograms, and sound management of assigned residence halls.
  • Review all incident reports generated from assigned residencehalls and oversee effective case response by home Residence HallCoordinators. Escalate highly unique and high-risk situations whereappropriate. Assess student behavior trends in respectivecommunities and formulate response (educational and studentconduct) to student concerns. Maintain effective outreach andreferral efforts for long-term crisis recovery or mental healthconcerns. Implement University and department protocols related toSexual Misconduct response. Educate staff and students about theUniversity Code of Conduct, Residence Hall Regulations, and fireand safety codes. Monitor incident response trends by ResidentAssistant staff and initiate interventions when necessary.
  • Coordinate on-site and front-line response to crisissituations, including those that are highly complex in nature andmay be life threatening. Assume a case management role withstudents experiencing long-term mental health challenges. Providenon-clinical student counseling, crisis intervention, and referralservices. Direct RHC and RA crisis response efforts within theUpper Division area. Assume University-wide on-call roles and actas primary contact and decision maker for all student crises incompliance with University protocols, State and Federal laws.
  • Provide live-in staff members with direction in day-to-dayoperations management for the residence halls within scope ofresponsibility: Opening and closing of halls, key and securitysystems management, custodial and maintenance issues, occupancymanagement, and room change process.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and maintain residence hallprogramming aimed at reaching departmental equity and inclusionoutcomes related. Create curriculum, learning exercises, andassessments for the program and train RAs and professional staff intheir associated roles.
  • Oversee RLH Equity and Inclusion Committee and ensure effectivestructures for the implementation of intercultural programming andsupport services for students from minoritized backgrounds. Guidethe development of RLH programs such as monthly culturalcelebrations; MLK Day of Service; and the UJIMA supportnetwork.
  • Provide leadership and coordination for Equity and Inclusionefforts within RLH. Identify key frameworks and develop curriculum,learning exercises, and evaluation for Professional and RA staff,and students. Train RA and professional staff in their associatedroles. Assess effectiveness and propose updates and adjustments forfuture year initiatives.
  • Lead the development and implementation of residence hall baseddiscrimination response protocols. Further competencies ofresidence hall staff in addressing discriminatory acts, includingsupport of individuals and community healing.
  • Student Life and institutional priorities.
  • In conjunction with the Senior Associate Director ofResidential Communities, create and maintain systems to remain upto date on the community climate and needs of their respectiveresidence halls.
  • Develop and administer assigned budgets.
  • Participate in all RLH department-wide efforts such asstrategic plan goals, residence hall openings and closings, andcommittee roles within RLH and the Division of Student Life.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Counseling or relatedfield, with three years of professional experience working withcollege students, or equivalent combination of education andexperience.
  • Non-clinical front-line assessment and referral skills.
  • Knowledge of student support programs and services, and crisisintervention techniques.
  • Familiarity with college student learning and developmenttheories.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of equitable practices and theability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies ina diverse community.
  • Experience with writing and measuring learning outcomes andassessment methods.
  • Ability to motivate, develop, direct and train assigned staffincluding coordinating and supervising work, fostering acooperative work environment, and maintaining employee morale in ahigh stress setting
  • Ability to contribute to the creation and implementation ofshort and long-range department goals
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and effectively prioritizeamong competing needs.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and presentationskills.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differingneeds and concerns of individuals with varying identities,cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituenciesin a diverse community and rapidly changing technicalenvironment.
