What happens to unused HSA funds?
Unlike many flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health reimbursem*nt arrangements (HRAs), unused HSA funds automatically carry over to the following year. Even if your employer provided the account and made contributions, the account belongs to you — so any remaining funds are carried over every year.
If you don't spend the money in your account, it will carryover year after year. Your HSA can be used now, next year or even when you're retired. Saving in your HSA can help you plan for health expenses you anticipate in the coming years, such as laser eye surgery, braces for your child, or paying Medicare premiums.
Unlike some other health plans where unused funds are forfeited at the end of the year, the money in your HSA is yours to keep. This feature provides flexibility and peace of mind, allowing you to save for future medical expenses or use the funds for other purposes when needed.

You can submit a withdrawal request form to receive funds (cash) from your HSA. If the cash is used to pay for ineligible purchases, it must be reported when you're filing your taxes. Once it's reported, it's subject to an income tax and treated as though it had never been in your tax-free HSA.
However, there are also risks and potential drawbacks to using an HSA account, including the high-deductible requirements, potential for misuse, and the effort required to manage and get the most out of these accounts.
Keep in mind that you can reimburse yourself for any expense at any point, as long as it was incurred after your HSA was established. So if you had an expense that you paid out-of-pocket last year after your HSA was established, but want to reimburse yourself for it this year, you can do so without penalty.
Gym memberships. While some companies and private insurers may offer discounts on gym memberships, you generally can't use your FSA or HSA account to pay for gym or health club memberships. An exception to that rule would be if your doctor deems fitness medically necessary for your recovery or treatment.
Online Transfers – On HSA Bank's member website, you can reimburse yourself for out-of-pocket expenses by making a one-time or reoccurring online transfer from your HSA to your personal checking or savings account. Online Bill Pay – Use this feature to pay medical providers directly from your HSA.
But if it's not an earth-shattering emergency, you're probably better off keeping your HSA. If you close your HSA and withdraw all the money, you're going to have to pay income tax on the withdrawal, plus a 20% additional tax if you're under age 65.
Does money in HSA ever expire?
All of the money in an HSA (including any contributions deposited by an employer) is owned by the employee even if they leave their job, lose their qualifying coverage or retire. The money in an HSA never expires. Unlike flexible spending accounts (FSAs), all remaining HSA funds roll over each year.
If you've already paid for qualified health care expenses out of your own pocket, you can reimburse yourself from the funds in your HSA. From the Home screen select “Reimburse Myself” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the submission process.
If you have money in your HSA when you turn 65, you can spend it on anything you want — but if you aren't spending it for a qualified medical expense, it will be taxed as income at your then current tax rate. You must stop contributing to your HSA when you enroll in any part of Medicare.

Using an HSA can save an average of $955 per year in taxes for individuals or $1,909 per year for families. The downside is that your insurance plan will likely pay for less of your medical expenses because you'll need a high-deductible health plan to contribute to an HSA.

Account holders who don't invest their HSA contributions could be missing an opportunity to earn tax-free returns. We generally suggest keeping two to three years' worth of routine medical expenses in cash, cash investments, or similar low-volatility investments within your HSA.
Verification of expenses is not required for HSAs. However, total withdrawals from your HSA are reported to the IRS on Form 1099-SA. You are responsible for reporting qualified and non-qualified withdrawals when completing your taxes.
At age 65, you can take penalty-free distributions from the HSA for any reason. However, in order to be both tax-free and penalty-free the distribution must be for a qualified medical expense. Withdrawals made for other purposes will be subject to ordinary income taxes.
Are you taking the right approach to your HSA? As of the end of 2023, the average HSA balance was $4,380. That's up from $3,930 at the end of 2022. If you have an HSA, it's a great thing to contribute more each year than you did the last year.
Will HSA pay for massage?
If you have a health savings account (HSA), you may be aware that you can use it for more than just covering copays, deductibles, and prescriptions. You can use it for massage therapy, holistic healthcare, mental healthcare, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and more.
By using untaxed dollars in an HSA to pay for deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and some other expenses, you may be able to lower your out-of-pocket health care costs. HSA funds generally may not be used to pay premiums.
But because regular veterinary bills aren't medical expenses for you or eligible dependents, you can't use your HSA for pets.
It's possible and common to have multiple HSAs—health savings accounts you can fund to cover qualified medical expenses for yourself, your spouse and your dependent family members. You may have collected them over the years from different employers, or perhaps you and your spouse each have one.
The IRS allows you to use your HSA to pay for eligible expenses for your spouse, children or anyone who is listed as a dependent on your tax return. That's true whether you have individual coverage or family coverage with an HSA through your health plan.
