Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez dominated Gennady Golovkin over 12 rounds to retain his undisputed super-middleweight championship in Las Vegas.

It was the third encounter between the modern day greats, but it was Alvarez's night once again thanks to a controlled performance.

After sidestepping a fightback from Golovkin in the championship rounds, all three judges were in agreement, scoring it for 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 for Alvarez.

The Mexican, who retains the IBF, WBA (Super), WBO and WBC titles, paid tribute to his rival after 36 rounds in the ring together.

Right now there's light heavyweights all around the world calling their managers. From Chris Eubank down saying I told you I could do it. We saw two guys who have peaked already. We've seen the best of these two guys.

  3. Post update

Golovkin showed that it is time for him to go. I don't see what he has left to prove. He looked like he was afraid to pull the trigger.

  4. 'Canelo clear winner'

We thought it would be a bit more a competitive fight but everyone thought there was a clear favourite in Canelo. He was a clear winner.

The fight wasn't competitive, the last third Golovkin had a really big effort but it wasn't enough.

Canelo won easier than we thought. It wasn't the third great fight.

  5. Bivol next for Canelo?

A rematch with Dmitry Bivol and a chance to avenge a second career defeat is in Canelo Alvarez's sights, although he admits he needs a bit of a rest before thinking about that fight.

  6. 'Canelo was better'

Gennady Golovkin: "Everybody knows this is high level, the best level of boxing. Everybody knows Canelo, every bad step can finish the fight.

"We trained well and this shows we did a very good fight because of it. This fight was more tactical, like chess. Today Canelo was better."

What changed after round eight? "Strategy. I feel not bad. It was a good fight."

Any plans to retire? "I have a great plan, I have lots of performance. I come back guys."

  7. 'I am a warrior'

Canelo Alvarez: "Thank you so much my friend. Thank you for everything. We gave the fans three good fights.

"He is a really good fighter. He is strong. That is why we are here. I am glad to share the ring with him. I will keep going forward to keep my legacy going strong.

"I am warrior, that is why I am here. It didn't surprise me. I know him. I am just glad to share the ring with him. I am glad to be involved in that kind of fight."

  8. Post update

The two hug again and the respect shown to each other has perhaps been the best thing about this fight.

The third, and you would think, final fight between these two was not a contest. Maybe it could have been different if Golovkin showed more of what he produced from round nine onwards much earlier but in the end a comfortable win for Canelo.

  9. BreakingCanelo wins

    Canelo v Golovkin

No surprise as Canelo takes the victory by unanimous decision (116-112, 115-113, 115-113)!

Canelo retains the undisputed super-middleweight crown.

The best rounds from Golovkin were from nine onwards. It wasn't the best from Golovkin but the best rounds from him in this fight.

He is 40. He looked like an old man in just about every round.

  11. Round 12

    Canelo v Golovkin

Canelo gets through the final round without anything silly. A number of clinches takes the rhythm out of things and the crowd show some signs of frustration that this fight has failed to really deliver.

The bell goes and the two fighters embrace. Great respect shown between the two but no controversy about this win for Canelo, who completely dominated the first eight rounds.

  12. Round 12

    Canelo v Golovkin

Into the final round. A clear win for Canelo, despite the late flurry. Golovkin needs the knockout.

  13. Round 11

    Canelo v Golovkin

An accidental clash of heads at the end of round 10 resulted in a cut above the eye for Canelo.

Golovkin has found some energy and determination and he is at Canelo straight from the start of this penultimate round, his movement is quicker and his punches are harder.

Canelo, though, just needs to get through these final two rounds after dominating the majority of this fight. He's far more cautious and there's few scoring punches in this 11th round.

I thought that was Golovkin's round. Why didn't we get that in the second or third? What happened?
